Forestry Technician (Wildland Fire Operations Technician)
Provides oversight during initial and extended attack fires, directs fireline activities and tactics of dispersed firefighters, resources, equipment, and aircraft. Provides for follow-up actions to safely and effectively manage wildland fires. Assigns missions to ground and aviation wildland fire suppression resources. Makes efficient and effective use of multiple types of interagency wildland fire suppression resources with varying capabilities. Ensures common communications for interagency resources. Monitors weather and fire behavior, and communicates changes to strategy and tactics. Transfers command to an upper level Incident Management Team as necessary. Provides protection for life, property and resources. Selects strategies and tactics to ensure safe operations for assigned resources. Recognizes potential hazardous situations and provides operational briefings. Initiates contacts with federal, state, and/or local law enforcement personnel as necessary to close roads, evacuate structures, and deal with the public. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. This position has been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been categorized as a Forestry Technician (Wildland Fire Operations Technician) within a moderate complexity fire program and requires selectee to meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. The TFLD qualification is the Primary Core IFPM requirement for Wildland Fire Operations Specialists/Technicians at a moderate complexity fire program. The RXB2 qualification is a Secondary Core IFPM requirements for Wildland Fire Operations Specialists/Technicians at a moderate complexity fire program. The ICT3 qualification is a Secondary Core IFPM requirement for Wildland Fire Operations Specialists/Technicians at a moderate complexity fire program. For more information on IFPM, click here. Selectees for IFPM positions requiring currency will be required to obtain and maintain currency for the NWCG qualifications listed above. This position is covered by the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) and 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d) as a Primary/Rigorous Firefighter. Applicants must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to this position unless there is sufficient prior Federal service in a covered position to permit retirement on or before the mandatory retirement age for this type of position. Candidates must possess a minimum of 90-days of wildland firefighting experience, gained through fire line work in containment, control, suppression or use of wildland fire. Successful completion of at least two full years of graduate education with major study leading to a Master's degree in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as (forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science.).
