The majority of these employees hold a bachelor degree in a science related field and have consistently demonstrated their ability to accurately run various microbiological and/or chemistry analysis.
Depending on the lab location, level of staffing, and type of testing, this position may manage key testing functions in the laboratory during the Lab Manager/Supervisor's absence.
At some locations, this position may be an extension of the food safety department and the Laboratory Technologist will assist the food safety department with sample collection in the plant and reviewing company compliance records etc.
Laboratory Technologist will be assigned special projects by the Laboratory Manager/Supervisor. These projects are normally related to food safety and/or plant profitability. The scope of these projects can be highly variable and at times will require the Laboratory Technologist to work totally independent.
When conducting routine analysis, the Laboratory Technologist will use established testing protocol and issue results using a pre-approved standardized template. On occasion, the Technologist may assist in data interpretation and/or the development of technical proposals.

1. 60% Conducts microbiology and/or chemistry tests according to established protocols. This includes, but is not limited to also maintaining laboratory testing records and issuing reports.
2. 25% Special projects related to food safety and/or plant profitability. The scope and duration of these projects is highly variable and will require the Technologist to work independently. This also includes reviewing and determining acceptability of company compliance records for the food safety department and overseeing key testing functions during the Lab Manager/Supervisor's absence.
3. 15% Analysis preparation. This includes, but is not limited to: sample preparation; preparation of microbiological testing media and purchasing of supplies.

o Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) from a four-year college or university in a science related field and 2-5 years related experience and/or training.
o 2 years hands on experience conducting microbiological or chemistry analysis.
o Knowledge of laboratory safety.
o Ability to use a variety of basic laboratory equipment.
o Strong computer skills using Excel spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
o Strong verbal and written communication skills.
o Must be able to travel on an occasional basis
o Strong attention to detail.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities. However, in the absence of a Supervisor, a lead maybe assigned to carry out advanced responsibilities such as ordering supplies.
